The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has granted approval to the Darlington small nuclear reactor (SMR) in Clarington, Ontario. The 300MW power plant by Ontario Power Generation is the first grid-scale SMR approved in the country.
CNSC's decision was disclosed following consultations with the local community. OPG applied to build the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 reactor in October 2022.
According to the licence, OPG has until March 2035 to complete the construction of Darlington. An additional licence for the operation of the asset still needs to be acquired.
