The fourth unit of the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) is now fully operational, according to an announcement by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL). The 700MW pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) began operating in March.
Since then, Unit 4 was operating at 90% of its capacity in accordance with permits acquired from regulator Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). Environmental permits for unit 3 (which came online last year) and 4 were issued in 2006.
Now at full power, the Kakrapar nuclear power plant counts with four PHWRs, totaling over 1.6GW of generation capacity. The total calculated investment for the construction of the two additional units is US$2.6bn.
