Repsol is ready to to build Ecoplanta, a waste-to-methanol plant in Tarragona, Spain. The project is calculated to require a total investment of US$818m, becoming Europe's first facility to produce methanol from waste through gasification.
The initiative has recently been approved by the company's board of directors.
According to Repsol's plans, Ecoplanta will have a processing capacity of up to 400,000 metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) of municipal solid waste and a production capacity of up to 240,000 metric tonnes per annum of methanol.
With operations scheduled for 2029, Ecoplanta is part of Repsol's efforts to produce up to 2.7 million metric tonnes per annum (MMtpa) by 2030.
