BP's Peacock project in Texas, US has entered operations. The 187MW solar power plant in San Patricio County will power a nearby petrochemical complex owned by ExxonMobil and Saudi Basic Industries Corp.
The complex, managed by a joint venture named Gulf Coast Growth Ventures, features an ethane steam cracker with a production capacity of 1.8 million metric tonnes per annum (MMtpa) of ethylene. The output is then used for the production of monoethylene and polyethylene.
The Peacock solar park was designed to reach an annual production of 360,000MWh. It will reduce the complex's greenhouse gas emissions by more than 256,000MMtpa. The facility is also expected to contribute with US$25m in tax revenue for the next 25 years.
