New market opportunities
Less than eight years after the Liza-1 discovery, Guyana is now a key player among global oil producers. The country is already producing oil from the Liza field, where the Liza Destiny and Liza Unity FPSOs operate, and has the potential to host up to 10 FPSOs following the string of successful discoveries announced by ExxonMobil and partners over the years. The oil major is currently making progress with its Payara, Yellowtail and Uaru fields – three capital-intensive projects featuring some of the world’s largest FPSO designs. While SBM Offshore, TechnipFMC and Saipem remain key contractors for Guyanese E&P projects, Modec has recently been awarded the FEED contract for the Uaru FPSO – the company’s first major contract in the country.
While E&P remains the key source of opportunities for the oil and gas supply chain in Guyana, midstream and power are now emerging sectors. An ambitious project to uti lise gas produced offshore is advancing, with Subsea 7 and Van Oord selected to build a 250km pipeline from the Liza field t o the shore. A natural gas processing plant and a gas-fired power plant will also be bu ilt, allowing Guyana to reduce dependence on fuel imports and replace diesel and fuel oil as power generation sources with cleaner natural gas.
Guyana’s project portfolio is increasing in number and CAPEX, and con tract activity grows steadily every year. From FPSOs to pipelines and gas processing plants, the South American country offers a wealth of opportunities for the energy supply chain.
