Offshore Wind

Session co-host:

The North Sea - A world leader in offshore wind renewable energy.

The North Sea has become a worldwide example of industrial transition thanks to its unique development over the last 50 years, as both the UK and the EU are making progress on the target of carbon neutrality by 2050. Home to a diverse energy mix and operating the largest offshore wind farms, Europe is at the forefront of offshore wind power, with approximately 25GW already installed.

Offshore wind energy is paving the way to achieving energy policy commitments in the global power sector, supporting countries to reach their net zero targets and continue their energy system transformation. The offshore wind project pipeline has shown no signs of slowing down and is now truly a global opportunity. The UK continues to lead the market in operational projects, with approximately 45% of all installations, followed by Germany, Denmark, Belgium, as well as the Netherlands, which will see its latest project Borssele III and IV offshore wind coming online this year.

In this session we will look at how the offshore wind industry is committed to being able to deliver further cost reductions, ability to power the North Sea region and look at the future pipeline of new deployments.

Ocean Energy

Session co-host:

Oceans are very much an untapped source of energy and yet have the potential to be an infinite power source. It has been reported by Ocean Energy Systems (OES) that global wave and tidal stream energy production has risen tenfold over the last decade. With the European Union now aiming to deploy 1GW of marine energy by 2030, we ask if wave and tidal energy can be the next generation of renewable energy technologies for Europe’s decarbonisation targets.

In this session we will look at current projects and the various technologies being used to harness the power from our oceans.

CCUS

Session co-host:

Carbon capture technology has been around for many years and it has been agreed by industry experts that it is a necessity to reach net zero goals. The market is at a pivotal point, and projects like the Northern Lights and Net Zero Teesside are paving the way forward for the industry, with many more following in their wake.

In this session we will be exploring the opportunities these projects give rise to. Followed by a wider high-level panel discussion exploring the CCS value chain and how future developments are needed if the UK and Europe are to achieve their carbon neutrality targets.

Offshore Electrification and
Power Networks

Session co-host:

Net Zero requires investing in both new technologies and in the low-carbon networks of the future, whilst also collaborating across borders to optimise the continued development of the North Sea over the coming decades. The session will look at oil and gas asset electrification, power from windfarms and offshore transmission infrastructure, all vital elements of reaching 2050 net zero targets.

The session will be split into two panel discussions: The first focussing on oil and gas asset electrification, which is of vital importance in decreasing oil and gas sector emissions to meet net zero targets, as well safeguarding the sector’s social licence to operate; The second panel will discuss power supply from wind farms through offshore grid systems, with a focus on the concepts and opportunities.

Both panels will discuss what has already been achieved, but also the challenged faced, sharing and identifying technical issues that need to be resolved for projects to go forward.

The Hydrogen Economy

Session co-hosts:

Session 1

Session 2

It is undeniable that hydrogen will soon become a cornerstone of our energy economy, as it becomes one of the most talked about clean technologies bringing us closer to our net zero goals. Many governments are already supporting the growth of hydrogen through the use of funding, mandatory targets and public-private partnerships. Hydrogen transportation is becoming a reality, fuel cells are constantly developing and improving, and the CCUS market is on the up. With such a rapidly growing market, it has become critical for industry to understand all the moving parts.

In this session, we will explore the hydrogen economy, from production, to storage, to end users. Plus, what critical investments are needed if we are to meet the targets set out in the Paris Agreement.

Waste to X

Session co-host:

Global decarbonisation has impacted a range of industrial sectors, including waste management, resulting in major advances in the waste-to-X market. Over the last few years, the Energy from Waste (EfW) sector has continued to gain momentum. The North Sea is leading the scene in implementing advanced low carbon technologies within the EfW market, including carbon capture and modern bioenergy, alongside its strong policy frameworks. With companies from the oil and gas and power industries also looking to diversify into the sector, this dedicated panel will observe the opportunities and future outlook of waste management.

Financing Net Zero

Session co-host:

The North Sea's pathway to financing net zero

The EU and UK have unveiled plans to eliminate its contributions to climate change by 2050. With less than 30 years to deliver net zero ambitions, a more systematic approach to financing is now needed.

If the North Sea Nations are to effectively achieve net zero targets and wider climate goals, there is a significant requirement for the expansion of net-zero investment, to further accelerate innovation and affordable technologies.

The question is what action is needed now to build the required frameworks to create an integrated North Sea net zero energy system.
