The North Sea - A world leader in offshore wind renewable energy.

The North Sea has become a worldwide example of industrial transition thanks to its unique development over the last 50 years, as both the UK and the EU are making progress on the target of carbon neutrality by 2050. Home to a diverse energy mix and operating the largest offshore wind farms, Europe is at the forefront of offshore wind power, with approximately 25GW already installed.

Offshore wind energy is paving the way to achieving energy policy commitments in the global power sector, supporting countries to reach their net zero targets and continue their energy system transformation. The offshore wind project pipeline has shown no signs of slowing down and is now truly a global opportunity. The UK continues to lead the market in operational projects, with approximately 45% of all installations, followed by Germany, Denmark, Belgium, as well as the Netherlands, which will see its latest project Borssele III and IV offshore wind coming online this year.

In this session we will look at how the offshore wind industry is committed to being able to deliver further cost reductions, ability to power the North Sea region and look at the future pipeline of new deployments.

Oceans are very much an untapped source of energy and yet have the potential to be an infinite power source. It has been reported by Ocean Energy Systems (OES) that global wave and tidal stream energy production has risen tenfold over the last decade. With the European Union now aiming to deploy 1GW of marine energy by 2030, we ask if wave and tidal energy can be the next generation of renewable energy technologies for Europe’s decarbonisation targets.

Net Zero requires investing in both new technologies and in the low-carbon networks of the future, whilst also collaborating across borders to optimise the continued development of the North Sea over the coming decades. The session will look at oil and gas asset electrification, power from windfarms and offshore transmission infrastructure, all vital elements of reaching 2050 net zero targets.

The session will be split into two panel discussions: The first focussing on oil and gas asset electrification, which is of vital importance in decreasing oil and gas sector emissions to meet net zero targets, as well safeguarding the sector’s social licence to operate; The second panel will discuss power supply from wind farms through offshore grid systems, with a focus on the concepts and opportunities.

Both panels will discuss what has already been achieved, but also the challenged faced, sharing and identifying technical issues that need to be resolved for projects to go forward.

It is undeniable that hydrogen will soon become a cornerstone of our energy economy, as it becomes one of the most talked about clean technologies bringing us closer to our net zero goals.
