Clean Tech Global Opportunities
The Netherlands has clear climate objectives to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 49% by 2030 and by 95% by 2050, compared to 1990. One way to support and achieve the climate objectives is to capture CO₂ for use, or for storage underground through Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS).
As the national coalition agreement and the national Climate Agreement underline the importance of CCUS for the energy transition, the Port of Rotterdam CO2 transport hub and offshore storage (Porthos) project is a proposed joint venture partnership between three state-owned companies, including Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), Gasunie, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
This innovative CCUS project is being prepared near Europe’s biggest port Rotterdam in South Holland, Netherlands, and is on schedule to store an annual amount of 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 from the industry in empty gas fields beneath the North Sea as from 2024.
Join Mark Driessen, Manager Public Affairs, Stakeholders and Communications, Porthos and Alexander Vink, Commercial Manager, Porthos, as they discuss the CCUS Project, regulatory and commercial developments and timelines.
