As the global economic recovery continues to gather steam, what is increasingly apparent is how it will be stymied by supply-chain disruptions that are now showing up at every corner. Different parts of the world have experienced supply chain issues that have been exacerbated for different reasons, for example, power shortages in China have affected production in recent months, while in the U.K., Brexit has been a big factor around a shortage of truck drivers. The U.S. and Germany are experiencing large backlogs at ports. Will this hinder export activity, are there learning from close industries and can innovation and collaboration play a part in easing the constraints? This session will identify the energy supply chain constrains on a global scale and discuss the challenges faced in the project lifecycle. Panellists will discuss what is needed to support the operator/developer and supply chain, finding the gaps, and utilising the opportunities. How can financial support unlock supply chain growth opportunities?

African countries have a unique abundance of untapped energy potential: the continent receives 325 days of sunlight per year, exploits less than seven percent of its hydroelectric potential and no more than two percent of geothermal capacity. As of today, renewables represent only 20 percent of the electricity generation mix. The reducing cost of renewable energy technologies, including storage, presents a real opportunity for Africa to move towards a clean energy pathway. Large-scale, high-impact renewable energy projects and programs are important to accelerating the energy transition and closing the energy access gap. In this session we have the honour welcoming five African State Government Officials to outline their energy transition plans.

COMBINED SESSION
Sessions Description: Opportunities across the international markets, industry challenges and global supply chain gaps. Future direction of offshore wind and HVDC
Session 1
Operational offshore wind capacity surpassed 30GW in 2020, with over 5GW added throughout the year in what represents yet another industry record across the world. Over the last year we have seen a much wider appreciation of how offshore wind can contribute at scale in tackling climate change, as both existing and emerging markets have continued to pursue their project pipelines and sector targets, through contract awards, ongoing seabed leasing rounds and offshore wind zone tenders. While the UK and Europe continues to retain its status as global leaders in offshore wind. The next decade is expected to witness a shift to the US and Asia-Pacific as growth markets in China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea further accelerate project implementation. This session will provide an overview of the offshore wind market as it progresses towards being a global industry and how expansion has inevitably begun to face a number of potential opportunities, challenges and barriers

Session 2
This year promises to be a pivotal time for the offshore wind industry, as it becomes the fastest growing renewable power segment to meet ambitious global energy targets. With this rapid growth in offshore wind farms, advancements in high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission technology have become an increasingly viable solution to transfer power from offshore wind farms to onshore grids. The uptake of HVDC systems for offshore wind export is growing rapidly worldwide. The total installed capacity is expected to increase over the next 10 years, with many organisations taking huge strides in developing the innovative system. This session will explore the global rise of HVDC and possible development paths, whilst accessing how this technology offers an effective solution to transmit renewable energy to demand areas and improve grid stability.
