About this event

The EIC is happy to announce the Breakfast in Rio - Decommissioning Opportunities with Petrobras and Ecovix

Currently, Petrobras has 55 platforms in Brazil that have been in operation for more than 25 years, considered a milestone of maturity by the ANP. The company is identifying the services needed to carry out the decommissioning of seven production units (four semi-submersibles and three FPSOs) and two floating storage and offloading (FSO) units at the Marlim and Voador fields in the Campos basin to come up with a strategy for contracting the supply chain.

The state-owned company has a total of 63 platforms that will be dismantled over the next few years. Among them are the P-32, which has been in the process of being decommissioned at the Rio Grande shipyard (RS) for sustainable disposal since December 2023, and the P-33, currently in the pre-decommissioning phase at the Port of Açu (RJ), with plans to be taken to the Rio Grande shipyard later for final decommissioning. Both are part of the Marlim Field. In 2024, the government estimates that Petrobras' investment in dismantling the production units alone could inject between R$ 15 billion (US$ 2.9 bn) and R$25 billion (US$ 4.8 bn) into the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Petrobras has already sold a pair of Marlim FPSOs - P-32 and P-33 - to local steelmaker Gerdau, which will be sustainably recycled at the Ecovix shipyard in Brazil. The Ecovix Group stands out for having the largest dry dock in Latin America and high-capacity gantry cranes. It excels in the construction of oil hulls and platforms and operates in the mooring of vessels, cargo handling and repairs to platforms and ships, as well as carrying out cargo operations in partnership with the Public Port of Rio Grande.

The company responsible for dismantling Petrobras' P-32 and P-33 platforms uses an innovative and sustainable decommissioning model. This process ensures that practically 100% of the unit will be recycled, with the scrap that will be used to produce steel and the other materials that will be safely disposed. The initiative not only reinforces Ecovix's expertise in the naval sector, but also contributes significantly to the local economy, as it has already generated 250 jobs in 120 days in the south of Rio Grande do Sul. It also reinforces the company's commitment to sustainability and a just energy transition, in line with global environmental and economic objectives.
