About this event
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a type of alternative fuel that is made from sustainable feedstocks and can be used as a replacement for traditional fossil fuels in the aviation industry. It is believed that SAF is the answer for a greener aviation sector with its significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional jet fuel.
SAF can be produced from a variety of feedstocks, including plant oils, agricultural residues, and waste products, and can be blended with traditional jet fuel or used on its own. Another significant advantage is that SAF has been proven to be a direct replacement to the traditional fossil based fuels currently in use due to it being fully compatible with existing jet engines and infrastructure, requiring zero additional investment.
There are several projects in the UK that are focused on the development and use of SAF. For example, in 2020, the UK's first SAF production facility opened in Avonmouth, near Bristol. The facility can produce up to 10 million litres of SAF per year using household waste and woody biomass as feedstocks. In addition, several airlines in the UK, including British Airways and easyJet, have committed to using SAF as part of their efforts to reduce their carbon emissions. Other SAF projects in the UK include the Biojet Supply Chain project, which is working to develop a sustainable supply chain for SAF in the UK, and the SkyNRG project, which aims to accelerate the adoption of SAF in the aviation industry. Currently more than 370,000 commercial flights have used SAF since 2016, this is more than 40 airlines, and 13 major airports already use and supply SAF with this number steadily growing.
Join us on Tuesday 18 April in Middlesbrough to take a closer look at some of the major products, as well as the current and future supply chain opportunities that are available alongside this growing sector.
The event will also provide the opportunity to book 1:1 “meet the buyer” sessions allowing you to find out first hand how to get involved in SAF.
With so much to discuss, it’s time we take off with Jetzero.
