About this event
Following on from the success of our event in 2019 we are pleased to launch our Cross Sector Decommissioning Showcase for September 2022 in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The decommissioning industry forms a vital component of the global energy industry and supply chain. Across the UK continental shelf alone – an incubator of significant decommissioning expertise - the offshore oil and gas decommissioning sector will be worth £14 billion over the next 10 years. Globally, £30 billion is expected to be spent on oil and gas decommissioning by 2030, with the major growth markets being Brazil, Angola, Australia, and the North Sea.
The nuclear decommissioning market is underpinned by an ageing fleet of reactors, new technologies coming to market and emerging policies. Europe is a key market with the likes of Germany and Scotland having made strong stances against nuclear power. Hunterston B ended electricity generation in January this year, one of seven AGR reactors in the UK EDF expects to shut down and to be at various stages of decommissioning by 2030. Other key markets include North America, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Africa.
In comparison, decommissioning strategies in the wind industry continue to be subject to debate. The industry remains at early stages. However, the mature onshore wind market will need to decommission 1,200GW by 2050, with Europe holding nearly 12,000 wind turbines expected for decommissioning by 2024. Discussions are now moving into offshore wind, as the first batch of operational wind farms move towards the end of its lifecycle, adding up to 85GW to be decommissioned by 2050. This creates a big market for the decommissioning of wind farms over the next decade, alongside the topical conversations of repowering and recycling.
The event will focus on the key energy markets of the decommissioning industry highlighting specific new business opportunities in the oil & gas, nuclear and wind sector. While we recognise that the scope of any decommissioning programme will depend on the specific circumstances of each installation this event will draw attention to the cross – sector themes between the industries that provide synergy such as regulations, skills, collaboration and technology transfer.
