The UK's future energy system needs to be made up of a diverse range of low-carbon and renewable energy technologies, all coming together to meet our targets. Recent studies are showing that the UK is not on track to meet our decarbonisation targets. We need a major economic and collective transformation in order to maintain the position as a global leader on tackling climate change, secure low-cost and abundant energy supply, and reap the economic rewards of the new global clean-technology economy.
Join us on Thursday 1st February in London, as we take a look the challenges, opportunities and future plans for power generation here in the UK. There will also be a New Year networking reception taking place after the sessions to continue the discussions with other EIC members and energy professionals.
AGENDA
12:00-13:00 Registration & Networking Lunch
13:00-13:50 Session One: Renewables
In recent years, the UK has emerged as a global leader in renewable energy. In moving away from traditional fossil fuels, alternative energy technologies such as solar, marine, biofuels and of course wind are set to supply our future energy needs. In the session we will take a look at some of these renewable energy sources that are in the mix for a UK low carbon future.
13:50-14:40 Session Two: Nuclear
Last year the UK government declared a ‘major acceleration of homegrown power’ to establish energy security. This led to the significant expansion of nuclear energy, with an ambition of up to 24 GWe of capacity by 2050 to provide about 25% of electricity. In this session we will look at the potential of nuclear power in the UK and consider if nuclear energy is our answer for a green future.
14:40-14:55 Comfort Break
14:55-15:45 Session Three: Conventional Power and the role of Hydrogen
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and it could play an essential role in tomorrow’s energy mix — from fuelling cars, trains, trucks and ships, to generating electricity and powering industry. In the session we will take a closer look at the hydrogen sector in order to examine if it is the key to generating affordable, reliable, and lower-carbon energy here in the UK.
15:45-16:30 Session Four: Panel - What are the next steps?
While there has been significant progress on reaching net zero targets, the next steps are looking to be much more challenging. Our panel will discuss the challenges, and what the future steps should be for the UK to deliver on our set targets.
