About this event

The EIC is happy to announce the Breakfast in Rio: Low Carbon Opportunities with Eletrobras

Eletrobras is a key player in Brazil's energy sector, driving the global energy transition with one of the cleanest electricity matrices worldwide. Approximately 96% of its installed capacity comes from low-carbon sources, primarily hydropower (94.6%). Committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, the company completed the divestment of its coal and natural gas thermal assets in 2024.

In green hydrogen development, Eletrobras is advancing a flagship project in Rio de Janeiro’s West Zone, where it plans to establish a 10 MW green hydrogen and oxygen production facility near a major steel mill. This initiative, developed in partnership with Paul Wurth Brasil (a subsidiary of SMS Group), strategically targets the robust demand for decarbonisation in Brazil’s steel industry. Feasibility studies for this transformative project are expected to conclude by Q1 2025.

Additionally, Eletrobras collaborates with Germany's SEFE and Kuwait's EnerTech on a larger initiative to produce up to 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, leveraging energy from its hydroelectric plants. Hydrogen exports are slated to begin by 2030, primarily serving European markets. The company is also working on a proposed green hydrogen and ammonia plant at the Pecém industrial complex in Ceará, in partnership with the state's government.
